Our Policy on Preservatives, Colours and Fragrances

In order to give our products shelf life and protect them and hence you from microbial activity we use the most natural preservative used by green cosmetics companies worldwide. We use a liquid preservative based on potassium sorbate (a natural substance) which we use for its fungicidal and fungistatic properties. This is supplemented with benzyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol which extend and balance the spectrum of activity.  We use the minimum amount of preservative in order to keep our products as organic and natural as possible. We also use vitamin E and rosemary leaf extract as anti-oxidants to protect against oxidisation.

A few natural skin care companies choose not to use preservatives and instead opt for grapefruit seed extract and rosemary leaf extract, or rely on the properties of essential oils and ingredients themselves to inhibit microbial activity. Such products are likely to have a realistic shelf life of around 3-6 months. The world we live in is inevitably inhabited by micro organisms, which exist on our skin, no matter how clean we are and it is there inevitable that microbes enter cosmetic products as they begin to be used, especially as many of us hoard partially used cosmetics in our cupboards for longer than 3-6 months! For these reasons we use a preservative, but in doing so we have chosen as greenly as possible.

Our products contain no artificial colours or fragrances.

Use By Dates

Use by dates are provided on all Aromatika products and will vary according to how the product is formulated, but a typical shelf life for one of our creams could be 18 months.
